From Kenjeran That Talent Will Be Created.
Of course we all understand that every individual always has a story of where he came from. The first place for a mission in the future. And for Widyanta Putra Teja that place is the Pacific Caesar Sports Hall in the Kenjeran area of Surabaya.
In the eastern part of Surabaya, the man who is familiarly called Widy began to summarize all his dreams. The dream of becoming a basketball player. The dream of being able to play with the Indonesian National Team uniform. A dream that he continues to pursue and is grateful for.
Some time ago we returned to the Pacific Caesar Sports Hall Surabaya with Widy to face Pacific in the continuation of the IBL. Furthermore, we summarize an interview with the player with the number 71 jersey about his memories at the Pacific Sports Hall, becoming the captain of the Satria Muda Pertamina and Iwan Fals teams.
When did Widy start training at the Pacific Sports Hall Kenjeran?
Since 6th grade of elementary school. Actually, at first I trained at GOR Kertajaya CLS, then suddenly CLS became a basketball school, then the fees at that time were quite expensive, then my coaches moved to Pacific. Well, because I felt comfortable with them, I also moved to Pacific. Because they are good fundamental coaches in my opinion, one of them is Handono Setiobudi or Koh Han. But I've been playing basketball since kindergarten hehe.
So the main reason Widy entered Pacific was because she followed the coach, right?
Yes, she followed the coach, because they said they were the best coaches in terms of basketball basics. But I also felt very compatible and their training methods were very suitable for me.
How long did you train at GOR Pacific?
I think it was around seven years, because in 2015 I was taken by Aspac Jakarta.
Which is closer to home, GOR Pacific or CLS Kertajaya?
Actually, if the distance is further to Pacific. So the house passes Kertajaya first then to Pacific. So GOR CLS is in the middle between my house and Pacific.
So you were a point guard since training at Pacific?
No, I used to play there as an all-around player, just attacking haha. Until high school, I wasn't even a point guard, I played on the wing. Well, the point guard was my friend named Felix Chandra, he used to be at CLS too but he didn't go pro. With him, I played pick and roll, fast break and others. So from elementary school to high school, I never once became an attack organizer, only after entering Aspac I was plotted to become a point guard.
So how did you feel suddenly becoming a point guard at the professional level haha?
I was a bit confused actually, like what the role was like and how because it was forced haha. Even though I liked it, it took time to adapt again. We were told to carry the ball all the time but also had to serve other players, well that was a bit difficult.
Were there any SM players that you faced at GOR Pacific at that time?
Back then there was Laurentius Oei, we were on the same team at Pacific, but we were in different age groups (KU) at that time. Laurent was three years older than me so he was actually my senior there. So at that time he was in KU-18, I was in KU-15, but I always participated in those two categories. They said that at that time because my ability was good enough to play in KU-18, but I still didn't get many playing minutes. Sometimes I played, sometimes I didn't.
Have you ever played against Avan too?
Oh yes, Avan was our opponent in Pacific. So he was from the Tri Dharma Sidoarjo team, so if there was a regional championship, we would definitely meet Avan. Then I also played against Krisna but I forgot the name of the team.
Have you ever thought about playing in Pacific, Wid?
Honestly, no, but I used to join their professional team training. It was an offer from one of their coaches at that time. If I'm not mistaken, I was still in junior high or high school and tried to practice there but they said I wasn't big enough and tall enough so I was taken by Aspac hehe. But it was still a valuable experience for me to be able to train with the Pacific team which at that time was still filled with their legendary players such as Gege Nagata, Eko Sasmito, Reiner Hutasoit, Indra Muhammad was also still a junior at that time. It was fun.
What achievements did Wid make at GOR Pacific?
At that time I was the KONI cup champion and the Kejurda champion and KU-18 several times.
What are Wid's best memories at GOR Pacific?
The times during practice, like every Saturday and Sunday were the days I waited for. So back then, when I was still a kid, playing basketball was fun, so even though I was tired from school for a week, the weekend was always the day I waited for because I could practice, practice and practice. And coincidentally my mom and dad always took me there, so our entertainment was going to the field and playing basketball hehe.
Is GOR Pacific still the same as when you were there, Wid?
Everything is almost the same, the Julius Caesar symbol and the shapes of the spectator seats. The only difference is the paint. I miss the times when we were punished haha because in the past, at KU, the coach was very disciplined, if you did something wrong you could be
