Satria Muda Pertamina officially announced the arrival of its first foreign player this season in the name of Wendell Lewis. The player from the United States officially became part of SM Pertamina for the 2025 season after becoming champions with New Taipei Kings in the Taiwanese league a few months ago.
SM Pertamina head coach Youbel Sondakh said that he had long been eyeing Wendell to fill one of the foreign legion positions in his squad this season and the biggest reason was because according to him Wendell was a player who could play defense and attack equally well.
"In addition, because he is the type of player who can quickly adapt to the system and scheme of his new team. Then he also played here with Rajawali so I think he already understands the atmosphere of the league here. Because honestly I need a player who already has experience playing in Indonesia right now, why because we know our preparation time is not much. Of course I hope Wendell can immediately adjust to SM," he said.
Asked about Wendell's past who had left Rajawali, Youbel said he was sure that did not happen at Satria Muda. Because that was also the main focus of the discussion between him and management before recruiting the man who had won the 2022 Portuguese basketball league.
"Because I believe that in terms of material, our players are more complete and complete, so I don't think that will happen again. In addition, I also told him to help us develop our young players here. Because as we know, he has a lot of playing experience. So we can't wait to play with him at SM," he concluded.
Wendell when met after training with SM said that he was very happy to be able to return to his career in Indonesia, especially this time he joined SM Pertamina, which is a team with a very strong champion culture.
"Very excited! That might be the most appropriate sentence right now. I've played here, I know some of the players here, so I think it will really help me in the adaptation process later. Besides, of course I want to help this team become champions again. And I'm sure of that because I see that we have great potential and energy for that and I really can't wait to get started," said Wendell.
